## Synopsis
2015-11-17 15:13:22 +00:00
For the examples below, we assume we're in a project directory looking like this:
2015-11-15 21:15:25 +00:00
```sh
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
.
├── css
│ └── style.css
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
├── index.html
└── package.json
```
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
2015-11-19 10:01:04 +00:00
All paths/routes are specified using [express syntax ](http://expressjs.com/guide/routing.html#route-paths ). To run the example projects linked below, clone the project, move into the example directory specified, run `ws` .
2015-11-17 14:06:45 +00:00
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
### Static site
Fire up your static site on the default port:
```sh
2015-11-15 21:15:25 +00:00
$ ws
serving at http://localhost:8000
```
2015-11-19 10:01:04 +00:00
[Example ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/tree/master/example/simple ).
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
### Single Page Application
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
You're building a web app with client-side routing, so mark `index.html` as the SPA.
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
```sh
$ ws --spa index.html
```
2015-11-16 23:02:27 +00:00
By default, typical SPA urls (e.g. `/user/1` , `/login` ) would return `404 Not Found` as a file does not exist with that path. By marking `index.html` as the SPA you create this rule:
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
*If a static file at the requested path exists (e.g. `/css/style.css` ) then serve it, if it does not (e.g. `/login` ) then serve the specified SPA and handle the route client-side.*
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
2015-11-19 10:01:04 +00:00
[Example ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/tree/master/example/spa ).
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
### URL rewriting
2015-11-15 21:15:25 +00:00
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
Your application requested `/css/style.css` but it's stored at `/build/css/style.css` . To avoid a 404 you need a rewrite rule:
2015-11-17 11:18:25 +00:00
```sh
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
$ ws --rewrite '/css/style.css -> /build/css/style.css'
2015-11-17 11:18:25 +00:00
```
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
Or, more generally (matching any stylesheet under `/css` ):
2015-11-17 11:18:25 +00:00
2015-11-15 21:15:25 +00:00
```sh
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
$ ws --rewrite '/css/:stylesheet -> /build/css/:stylesheet'
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
```
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
With a deep CSS directory structure it may be easier to mount the entire contents of `/build/css` to the `/css` path:
2015-11-17 11:18:25 +00:00
```sh
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
$ ws --rewrite '/css/* -> /build/css/$1'
2015-11-17 11:18:25 +00:00
```
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
this rewrites `/css/a` as `/build/css/a` , `/css/a/b/c` as `/build/css/a/b/c` etc.
2015-11-17 11:18:25 +00:00
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
#### Proxied requests
If the `to` URL contains a remote host, local-web-server will act as a proxy - fetching and responding with the remote resource.
Mount the npm registry locally:
2015-11-15 23:52:13 +00:00
```sh
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
$ ws --rewrite '/npm/* -> http://registry.npmjs.org/$1'
```
Map local requests for repo data to the Github API:
```sh
2015-11-17 15:13:22 +00:00
$ ws --rewrite '/:user/repos/:name -> https://api.github.com/repos/:user/:name'
2015-11-15 21:15:25 +00:00
```
2015-11-19 10:01:04 +00:00
[Example ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/tree/master/example/rewrite ).
2015-11-25 20:53:09 +00:00
### Mock Responses
Mock a data service, serve any custom/dynamic content.
A mock definition maps a route to a response. Mock a home page.
```json
{
"mocks": [
{
"route": "/",
"response": {
"body": "< h1 > Welcome to the Mock Responses example< / h1 > "
}
}
]
}
```
Conditional response, depending on the request.
```json
{
"mocks": [
{
"route": "/two",
"request": { "accepts": "xml" },
"response": {
"body": "< result id = '2' name = 'whatever' / > "
}
}
]
}
```
Multiple potential responses. First request to match.
```json
{
"mocks": [
{
"route": "/three",
"responses": [
{
"request": { "method": "GET" },
"response": {
"body": "< h1 > Mock response for 'GET' request on /three< / h1 > "
}
},
{
"request": { "method": "POST" },
"response": {
"status": 400,
"body": { "message": "That method is not allowed." }
}
}
]
}
]
}
```
More dynamic response.
```json
{
"mocks": [
{
"route": "/four",
"module": "/mocks/four.js"
}
]
}
```
Tokens in the route are passed to the response.
```json
{
"mocks": [
{
"route": "/five/:id\\?name=:name",
"module": "/mocks/five.js"
}
]
}
```
[Example ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/tree/master/example/mock ).
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
### Stored config
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
Use the same port and blacklist every time? Persist it to `package.json` :
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
```json
{
"name": "example",
"version": "1.0.0",
"local-web-server": {
"port": 8100,
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
"forbid": "*.json"
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
}
}
```
2015-11-17 15:13:22 +00:00
or `.local-web-server.json`
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
```json
{
"port": 8100,
"forbid": "*.json"
}
```
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
local-web-server will merge and use all config found, searching from the current directory upward. In the case both `package.json` and `.local-web-server.json` config is found in the same directory, `.local-web-server.json` will take precedence. Command-line options take precedence over all.
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
To inspect stored config, run:
```sh
$ ws --config
```
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
### Logging
By default, local-web-server outputs a simple, dynamic statistics view. To see traditional web server logs, use `--log-format` :
```sh
$ ws --log-format combined
serving at http://localhost:8000
::1 - - [16/Nov/2015:11:16:52 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 12290 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/48.0.2562.0 Safari/537.36"
```
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
The format value supplied is passed directly to [morgan ](https://github.com/expressjs/morgan ). The exception is `--log-format none` which disables all output.
2015-11-25 20:53:09 +00:00
### Access Control
By default, access to all files is allowed (including dot files). Use `--forbid` to establish a blacklist:
```sh
$ ws --forbid '*.json' '*.yml'
serving at http://localhost:8000
```
[Example ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/tree/master/example/forbid ).
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
### Other usage
2015-11-17 12:55:25 +00:00
2015-11-17 17:50:37 +00:00
#### Debugging
Prints information about loaded middleware, arguments, remote proxy fetches etc.
```sh
$ ws --verbose
```
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
#### Compression
2015-11-16 10:30:04 +00:00
2015-11-17 13:49:12 +00:00
Serve gzip-compressed resources, where applicable
```sh
$ ws --compress
```
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
#### Disable caching
2015-11-17 14:06:45 +00:00
Disable etag response headers, forcing resources to be served in full every time.
2015-11-17 13:49:12 +00:00
```sh
$ ws --no-cache
```
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
#### mime-types
You can set additional mime-type/extension mappings, or override the defaults by setting a `mime` value in the stored config. This value is passed directly to [mime.define() ](https://github.com/broofa/node-mime#mimedefine ). Example:
```json
{
2015-11-17 14:06:45 +00:00
"mime": {
"text/plain": [ "php", "pl" ]
}
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
}
```
2015-11-19 10:01:04 +00:00
[Example ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/tree/master/example/mime-override ).
2015-11-17 14:02:23 +00:00
#### Log Visualisation
Instructions for how to visualise log output using goaccess, logstalgia or gltail [here ](https://github.com/75lb/local-web-server/blob/master/doc/visualisation.md ).

## Install
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
Ensure [node.js ](http://nodejs.org ) is installed first. Linux/Mac users may need to run the following commands with `sudo` .
2013-06-04 14:23:50 +01:00
```sh
$ npm install -g local-web-server
```
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
This will install the `ws` tool globally. To see the available options, run:
```sh
$ ws --help
```
2015-11-15 23:00:17 +00:00
## Distribute with your project
2015-11-16 10:51:32 +00:00
The standard convention with client-server applications is to add an `npm start` command to launch the server component.
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
1\. Install the server as a dev dependency
2015-11-16 10:51:32 +00:00
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
```sh
$ npm install local-web-server --save-dev
```
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
2\. Add a `start` command to your `package.json` :
2015-11-16 10:51:32 +00:00
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
```json
2014-06-17 13:42:48 +01:00
{
2015-11-16 10:51:32 +00:00
"name": "example",
2014-06-17 13:42:48 +01:00
"version": "1.0.0",
2015-11-16 10:51:32 +00:00
"local-web-server": {
"port": 8100,
2015-11-19 16:15:34 +00:00
"forbid": "*.json"
2015-11-16 10:51:32 +00:00
},
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
"scripts": {
"start": "ws"
}
2014-06-17 13:49:46 +01:00
}
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
```
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
3\. Document how to build and launch your site
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
```sh
$ npm install
$ npm start
2015-11-16 11:23:53 +00:00
serving at http://localhost:8100
2014-06-17 13:37:51 +01:00
```
2013-06-04 14:23:50 +01:00
2015-11-15 23:00:17 +00:00
